The Boston University Rocket Propulsion Group (BURPG) is an undergraduate research group that designs, manufactures, and launches rockets. Our goal is to be the first university group to launch a liquid fueled rocket to space via excellence in undergraduate engineering. By continually redefining the expectations for amateur rocketry and giving students the tools to succeed post-graduation, we hope to inspire people to do what may seem impossible.
BURPG’s Horizontal Test Stand (HTS) is designed to allow testing of liquid engines with up to 10,000 pounds of thrust.
In 2023, BURPG conducted 3 engine tests of their Iron Lotus engine on HTS, each producing 2,500 pounds of thrust. They utilized SECO7 37˚ Flared Gaskets to seal their large 1″ diameter lines that feed propellants from tanks to the engine. SECO seals allow BURPG to move fast, not worrying about perfect flares, and instead focus on rigorous testing campaigns and fast-paced projects.
In the near future, HTS will be upgraded to support cryogenic propellants, which will utilize SECO seals to ensure no leaking from line connection points. They look forward to testing the cryogenic configuration in 2024.
